Sutlema manor gate tower

The first reference about Sutlema manor dates back to 1425, the knight manor (Sutlem).
The building of the representative Baroque complex of the manor, that by now is destroyed, in ruins or rebuilt, was started in the last decades of the 18th century.

The manor was planned to have a unique lense-shaped structure. On both sides of the lense there were representative Baroque gate towers with domes, however instead of the northern one a vodka distillery was built at the end of the 19th century.

The preserved gate tower is one of the few large gate constructions of manors in Estonia. The historical round roughcast tower made of flagstone that was already in danger of destruction was partially restored in 1999. The lower floor has large door openings with high arches, and on the second floor there are 8 high arched windows and a flat oval window in their place.
The wall surrounding the manor park adjoined the tower at an angle, and at the place of connection was so high, that one could walk to the second floor of the tower. Even in the 1950s young villagers gathered on the second floor of the tower to dance.

Sutlema park and its ponds are taken under protection. The gate tower is listed as a monument of architecture.
The gate tower is a municipal property of the Kohila municipality, and the manor is privately owned.

Sutlema is located approximately 2 km from Hageri in the direction of Kiisa.
